Is it true? Myths, facts and statistics about lymphedema risk

MAYBE SO.

A study conducted at the MUHC suggests that preventive wearing of compression garments reduces the occurrence of lymphedema in women undergoing breast cancer surgery. It is assumed that a similar preventive intervention for gynecological, genitourinary and melanoma cancers could produce similar results. Further studies are needed to provide more evidence.

FALSE.

These procedures have been shown not to cause lymphedema, and disinfection measures pose no particular risk of infection for the arm at risk of lymphedema. However, to be on the safe side, whenever possible, these procedures, as well as infusion lines and port-a-caths, should be inserted on the arm that is not at risk. If you develop lymphedema, your affected limb should be protected from these procedures as much as possible.

VERY FALSE.

Your lymphatic system is still working well, protecting you from infections, viruses, and disease. Your system is not deficient until your doctor diagnoses you with lymphedema. What’s more, if you were to develop lymphedema, only the affected area would be more susceptible to infection. The rest of your body is well protected. You have no increased risk of catching diseases like the flu, and you can still receive vaccinations safely.

MAYBE YES, MAYBE NO.

The risk of developing lymphedema following cancer treatment is present for life. Modern medicine teaches us that we are lucky to survive various cancers much longer. Although the majority of cases occur within the first two years of cancer treatment, the most recent studies reveal that the risk of developing lymphedema persists beyond that – with patients developing lymphedema 5, 10, 15 and more years after their treatments have ended. Vigilance through self-observation therefore remains essential.

FALSE.

More than half of all suspected cases of lymphedema in Canada are secondary to chronic venous insufficiency and severe obesity (body mass index over 50), which is why it’s so important to treat venous insufficiency and obesity promptly and appropriately. While only 31% of lymphedema cases can be linked to cancers (sarcoma, gynecological, breast, melanoma, genitourinary, and others), cancer survivors will pay particular attention to preventing and managing obesity and venous disease.

The best-known and most effective advice for preserving the general health of the population applies perfectly to reducing your risk of lymphedema.
